(9/17/2024)Let us make it perfectly clear: The Republican Party - who, at the NRAs behest, refuses to make a single effective change to our heartbreakingly stupid gun laws - is directly complicit in every massacre, gun suicide, dead wife, slain girlfriend, murdered family, slaughtered child killed by yet another clotted, gun-wielding male. And the National Rifle Association remains the truest terrorist organization in America, far more nefarious - and brutally effective - than ISIS could ever dream to be. Mark Morford. "Even if Trump passes from the scene, the embrace of violence and intimidation as a political tactic by a faction of the GOP will cause violence of all types to rise - against all Americans." Rachel Kleinfeld The issue isn't really the guns. The issue is armed political intimidation, and a drift toward insurgency. Letter to the NYT The mass shootings will continue until well paid and unprincipled NRA supporting GOP politicians and SCOTUS justices are removed. Because Republicans are demonizing immigrants, other races, religions, gays, opposing politicians and others, they have drawn targets on their victims. Hence the mass shootings of Black people, Asian women, Jewish people, gays, and political violence. The culture war brings on the shooting war. Many are startled to learn that the U.S. Supreme Court didn't rule that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual's right to own a gun until 2008, when District of Columbia v. Heller struck down the capital's law effectively banning handguns in the home. In fact, every other time the court had ruled previously, it had ruled otherwise. Why such a head-snapping turnaround? Don't look for answers in dusty law books or the arcane reaches of theory. How the NRA Rewrote the Second Amendment (5/2014) For every U.S. soldier killed in Afghanistan during 11 years of war, at least 13 children were shot and killed in America. More than 450 kids didn't make it to kindergarten. Another 2,700 or more were killed by a firearm before they could sit behind the wheel of a car. Every day, on average, seven children were shot dead. At least 28,000 children and teens were killed by guns over an 11-year-period The NRA's role in the Trump-Russia scandal was substantial. Maria Butina, eventually convicted as a Russian spy, used "relationships within the NRA to build an informal channel of diplomatic relations with Russiaβ. Her efforts included a famous public exchange with Donald Trump during his first campaign, in which he expressed his affection for Vladimir Putin and promised to improve relations as president. Review of Misfire: Inside the Downfall of the NRA by Tim Mak (Guardian) The insistence on unfettered gun ownership is a core tenet of white identity politics. Bryan Stevenson In the 2019 Global Peace Ranking, the United States is listed [for safety] in 128th place. This represents a drop of four places from the previous year. The USA ranks lower than countries like Niger, Nicaragua, the Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Brazil, and El Salvador. The United States has fallen in rankings in every single report that the Global Peace Ranking has put out since 2016. Some of the reasons for this drop include a decrease in life satisfaction and a growing wealth gap. 2018 was a particularly active year for right-wing extremist murders: Every single extremist killing - from Pittsburgh to Parkland - had a link to right-wing extremism. "U.S. movies, tv shows, video games, music, news, and schools are uniquely and increasingly violent. Primates' chief form of behavior is imitation. Humans are no exception to that rule. Human cultures that have not known stories of mass-murder have also not known mass-murder. Anthropologists have studied cultures in which people have had an absolute taboo on taking human life." David Swanson ...gun legislation requiring a background check before one could purchase a firearm... had as high as 90 percent public backing, but was voted down in a congress swimming in gun lobby money. A long time ago, when movie admission was less than a dollar,
Western movies played frequently. The typical story: lawless towns were
unsafe for ordinary families because of rogue gangs and rampant gun
violence. The Supreme Court's 2008 Heller decision loosened gun laws and made the American shooting gallery possible. The Court ignored the first few words of the Second Amendment: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state..." Violence works. It produces a culture of fear. It has
dramatically reduced access to abortion. It
has limited speech. Its
wide use has led to militarization of the police and to drastic
shrinking of civil liberties. It is
why we are on a fast path to a police
state. It is the technique minority ideologues can take political
power. That's why it is a natural strategy for religious
fundamentalists or fascists to gain control. It's why Republicans
love guns. "Political power grows at the barrel of a gun." Mao Tse-tung Although Sens. Murphy and Blumenthal are fighting for reform,
there is paralysis at the federal level. Thank the Connecticut legislature and
Gov. Malloy for passing a comprehensive gun violence prevention law. We
owe it to the Sandy Hook families and all the other victims of
violence to roll back the Dickey Amendment and restore the assault weapons ban. - - - Considering
Newtown, Aurora, Virginia Tech, Columbine, Tuscon (Gabby Giffords),
and widespread
mayhem on American streets,
politicians should pass sensible gun control laws.

You'll note you don't hear about many mass shootings in Australia, Japan or for the most part the United Kingdom, or other civilized countries whose politicians have not been bought by 10 major gun manufacturers. In fact, when a mass shooting was carried out, by a white nationalist terrorist at a mosque in New Zealand last March, 2019, the New Zealand government promptly banned semi-automatic assault weapons. It just took one (admittedly horrific) incident. In the US, hundreds of mass shootings a year don't soften the hearts of our bought-and-paid-for legislators even a little bit. Juan Cole

“If the Republican Party would rather work for the NRA than the American people and if they won’t do their jobs to keep our children safe, then somebody else has to step up,” Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).
"...the Second Amendment is not an important aspect of modern liberal democracy. It does not protect or defend the rights of citizens; to the contrary, it results in tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths every year. One might even be tempted to conclude the opposite: that the Second Amendment presents a challenge to liberal democracy because it enables "lone wolf" terror, mobilizes counterterror agents, necessitates heavily armed police, and perpetrates a level of violence and murder not found in an other democracy of the world" Democracy Betrayed : William W Keller
"The hidden agenda of right-wing militias, the Tea Party, the lunatic fringe of the Republican Party, the National Rifle Association, and the survivalist cults is the ensure that guns will keep the home and family from being overrun by the crazed black hordes that will escape from their colonies in our urban slums. The mother of Adam Lanza, who carried out the Newtown massacre after first killing her, was a survivalist; she had stockpiled weapons in her home for impending social and economic collapse. Guns were intended for a well ordered militia. See what happens when right wing judicial activists decide to ignore that phrase in the original Constitution. SCOTUS, ignoring the original Second Amendment phrase "A well regulated militia", ruled that people have robust, personal gun rights, so why be surprised that police want protective gear. It's a new arms race between people and the police. Charles Derber had it right is his book: The Wilding of America.
Trump's racist, white nationalist rhetoric has provided momentum to right-wing violence and domestic terrorism. The NRA was used by Russians to recruit Republicans. A consequence of SCOTUS wrong-headed, partisan decision, Republican disdain for a public health crisis, and President Trump's right-wing nationalism, has been an epidemic of hate crimes, mass shootings, a ratcheting up of security in many public settings, now including schools. High security is easy to tighten and difficult to unwind. Combined with weak privacy laws, the internet-enabled, universal surveillance that now extends into the home and to late model automobiles, the final result is a police state. It would be prudent to Repeal 1996 Dickey Amendment preventing the Centers for Disease Control from researching the public health crisis that gun violence most definitely is. Renew the lapsed 2004 assault weapons ban;
Confront the NRA's grip resulting in more guns than people (357 vs. 324 million). Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Delaware have joined together to form "States for Gun Safety," which Republicans would likely dismantle if elected to govern. There's been plenty of action: Accepting NRA contributions and shamelessly proposing the fake armed-teachers solution to a real school shooting problem Congressional candidates must face the gun safety issue that is a 2018 litmus test. Thousands of kids protesting may make a difference in the next election. They will vote soon and it won't be for Republicans. The GOP is committed to
unlimited funding for the US world's largest military.
Not coincidentally, the US is also the world's largest
arms supplier. As a result, the arms industry is well
funded and powerful. The
NRA is its subsidiary. Of the 307 legislators receiving NRA support, 92% of them are Republicans. The arms industry, recipient of the blank check from the US taxpayer, is the leading cheerleader for our endless war. It uses the same tactics that the tobacco industry developed to sell arms to the citizenry. The US by comparison to other countries has, as a result, become a shooting gallery. Safety is NOT improved. In response, police have been militarized. We have a new arms race: police vs people armed with advanced weapons. Republicans have opposed the most basic gun safety initiatives. Credit them and their NRA allies for the arms race between the police and the 'gun owners', for the new need for armed guards at our schools, for the wild shootouts on the streets, for the increased suicides, and the tragic increase in deadly domestic violence. The gun nuts, The Tea Party
subsidiary of the GOP, in their zeal, completely miss that they are
working against their own self-interest and rapidly losing most of
their actual civil liberties. The loosening of the Second Amendment may lead to the
loss of every other right. Increasing security is apparent everywhere.
Schools shootings have had the effect of placing police in schools,
locking them down. Security procedures have been put in place in many
places including movie theatres, casinos, and even sports events, but
especially airports. Police have been militarized and a vast national security apparatus has
been created to surveil the citizenry. Anyone different, minorities or dissident, is suspect and probably at risk. Yes, the US IS exceptional... in gun violence.

Since terrorists struck the U.S. on 9/11/2001, more than 300,000 Americans have lost their lives to guns—more than 100 times as many people as the number who died when the World Trade Center fell. We’ve spent well over a trillion dollars fighting terrorism, but we live with the threat of random terror in our schools and on our streets on any given day. That’s just the price we pay for “freedom,” I guess. Or so the NRA would have us believe, as they corrupt our politicians and subvert popular support for gun control sanity. Smirking Chimp: 12 Signs America Is Insane By Jaime O'Neill "After a shoe bomb attempt in 2001, shoes often have to be removed at airports. A failed liquid bomb attempt meant restrictions on liquids being taken onto planes. Could the United States please explain why after almost daily mass shootings in your country, no action is taken? Are shoes and shampoos really more dangerous than guns?" MALCOLM BYRNE Gorey, Ireland (Letter to the New York Times 10/3/2015) As someone who grew up in a place where guns designed to kill people are more or less banned and where no one feels that some essential freedom has been lost (on the contrary, freedom from fear is cherished) I often wonder what it will take for Americans to absolutely reject the groups like the NRA, all their ideas, and anyone who supports their morbid, necrophiliac love of an element of the constitution that is anachronistic, poorly written, unclear, and insanely stupid given modern weaponry. After which, we could actually start to do something to save the approximately 30,000 lives lost to gunshot wounds every year, many of them children. Mathew Chapman. "As Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, one of his followers drew a sword and struck the servant of the High Priest. Jesus immediately said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. (Mathew 26:52)" I was shocked, as everybody else was, of course. One has to ask oneself about these particular young people and their families. But as with all the other school shootings, it was a fact also that the young people who got involved in them almost all seemed to have a fascination for media violence. They also had access to guns. They obviously were troubled human beings, and this could be seen from the beginning." Sissela Bok
